NCSA Junior Nationals    (March 18-22, 2008)

The NCSA Junior Nationals swim meet was held at the Orlando YMCA in Florida.  Preliminaries were held in short course yards, and finals (top 24 from prelims) were held in long course meters.  Time trials were offered in both SCY and LCM.  This special format is adopted in Olympic years to give swimmers an opportunity to qualify for Olympic Trials (LCM only).  Jackie Hynson was the sole qualifier from the Raiders for this meet.  She entered the meet with qualifying times in the 50, 100, and 200 butterfly and bonus qualifying times in the 50, 100, and 200 backstroke.

On Wednesday she competed in the 200 back and 200 fly.  Seeded 124th in the back, she dropped two seconds from her previous best time swum at Maryland Champs just two weeks ago, swimming a AAAA time of 2:05.21 and finishing 57th.  Seeded 49th in the fly, she shaved over three seconds from her personal best time, swimming a AAAA time of 2:02.28.  She finished in a tie for fourteenth, thus qualifying for the consolation finals heat.  Swimming that evening, she finished twelfth overall with a AAAA time of 2:18.31 and shaved three seconds from her previous best long course meters time.

On Thursday, Jackie swam a time trial for the 400 IM in short course yards format.  She swam a personal best time of 4:35.55 (AAA), again shaving four seconds from her previous best time swum at Maryland Champs two weeks ago.

On Friday, Jackie competed in the 100 back and 100 butterfly.  Seeded 191st in the 100 back, Jackie swam 58.15, breaking a minute for the first time.  Her AAAA time was good for a 46th place finish.  She then swam another AAAA time in the butterfly, finishing 30th in 56.42, quite an improvement over her 149th place seed.  For her last event of the week, Jackie swam a 200 back time trial in long course meters.  Her AAA time of 2:26.26 eclipsed her previous best time by nearly four seconds.

All seven of Jackie’s swims set new Raiders team records in both the 15-18 Girls and OPEN Girls categories.  In addition, her split in the 100 fly (26.62) set new team records in the 50 fly, making a total of twelve new short course yards records and four in long course meters.  Jackie also qualified to swim at the meet again next year, posting qualifying times in the 50 back, 100 back, 200 back, 50 fly, 100 fly, and 200 fly, and a bonus qualifying time in the 400 IM.  Even more impressive, she qualified for the Speedo Long Course Junior Nationals which will be held in Minneapolis in August.  She swam both SCY and LCM qualifying times for the 200 butterfly.  She also swam bonus qualifying times for the meet in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, and 200 backstroke.

Congratulations to Jackie on a great meet and to all Raiders on a very successful 2007-2008 short course season!

Spring Sectionals    (March 13-16, 2008)

Four Raiders qualified to compete in individual events at the four-day meet officially known as the Speedo Championship Series Eastern Zone South Region which was held at the University of Maryland in College Park.  Qualifiers were Mike Biffel (100 back and 200 back), Jackie Hynson (200 free, 100 back, 200 back, 100 fly, 200 fly, and 400 IM), Kathleen Lyon (100 fly and 200 fly) and Nathan Stephens (100 breast).  In addition, Curt Albert, Christine Dunleavy, Sarah Grigg, and Jake Quartuccio qualified to swim relay events at the meet.  Since it is an Olympic year, the meet was held in a long course meters format for both prelims and finals.

All of the Raiders were rooting for Mike Biffel as he attempted to qualify for Junior Nationals.  In the 100 back, Mike swam a AAA time of 1:02.16 in prelims, over two seconds faster than his personal best and less than a second from a JNats cut, and finished 16th.  He set new 15-18 and Open team records in the event, shaving nearly a half second from Bobby Rose’s 2004 times.  He also finished 16th at finals with a time of 1:02.68.  Mike came even closer in the 200 back, swimming a AAA time of 2:12.42 in prelims, finishing twelfth.  His time was a heartbreaking three hundredths off of the JNats cut!  Nevertheless, it was nearly five seconds faster than his personal best, eclipsing his own team records in the event.  Swimming that night, Mike finished eleventh overall with a time of 2:12.98.

Also swimming for the boys in individual events, Nathan Stephens finished 31st in the 100 breast with a AA time of 1:12.27.  In his 50 free bonus event, Nathan swam a personal best AA time of 27.20 and finished 96th.  The quartet of Mike Biffel, Nathan Stephens, Curt Albert, and Jake Quartuccio swam two relays.  They finished seventeenth in the 4x50 medley relay with a time of 1:56.79 and fourteenth in the 4x100 medley relay with a time of 4:15.66.  Both are new team records.  Mike’s leadoff leg in the 200 medley relay (29.24) also lowered his own team records in the 50 back.

For the girls, the best performance was the 4x100 medley relay.  The foursome of Jackie Hynson, Christine Dunleavy, Kathleen Lyon, and Sarah Grigg finished sixteenth in the event, establishing the Raider team record with a time of 4:47.48.  In individual events, Kathleen Lyon swam a AA 1:10.03 (63rd) in the 100 fly, an A 2:38.14 (52nd) in the 200 fly, and a AA 1:03.67 (88th) in her 100 free bonus event.  Jackie Hynson elected to not swim any individual events since she was preparing to compete at Junior Nationals in a few days. However, she swam a personal best in the 100 back as the lead leg in the medley relay.  Her AAA time of 1:08.47 is a bonus qualifying time for Junior Nationals and lowered her own 15-18 and Open team records by over four seconds,

CBAC Odd Age Group Meet    (January 25-27, 2008)

Over fifty Raiders traveled to St. Mary’s College to compete at the annual Odd Age Meet hosted by CBAC.  Age groups for this meet are 7&Under, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15, and 16&Over.  Mike Biffel led the Raiders with seven personal bests, six gold medals, and a record-setting swim in the 200 backstroke, shaving over a second from his own 15-18 and Open records.  Curt Albert was not far behind with six top-three finishes, personal bests in all eight events, and his first-ever Maryland Champs cuts.

The younger boys were not to be outdone.  Seven-year-old Jacob Miller, eight-year-old Abe Melendez, and nine-year-old Andrew Nguyen all had stellar performances.  Abe eclipsed Jacob Coghan’s 2002 50 back record by three seconds and Jacob Miller’s 100 back record by thirty-one hundredths (1:44.01).  His 50 back time of 46.65 is a B time for 10&under boys!  Jacob set four team records, shaving a second from his own record in the 50 free, five seconds from Andrew Tominack’s 2004 record in the 100 free, nearly a second from Andrew Tominack’s 50 fly record, and establishing the record in the 100 fly.  Jacob also claimed four firsts and one second in individual events and swam three 10&under B times!  Andrew Nguyen knocked three seconds from Christian Ritacco’s 2002 record in the 9-10 Boys 100 free, nearly four seconds from his own record in the 100 back, over a second from his own record in the 50 fly, and twenty seconds from Christian’s record in the 200 IM!

The last two of the fourteen new team records were swum by twelve-year-old McKenzie Olup.  Swimming the 200 breast for the first time, she eclipsed by five seconds the team record Christine Carpenter set at the same meet six years ago.  She also shaved seven tenths from her own record in the 100 breast.

Others who swam personal bests in all of their events were Ethan Chung, Audrey Donahue, Susan Duncan, Sydney Fuller, Patrick Jackman, Abe Melendez, Kourtney Miller, Leann Miller, Jonathan Mitchell, Connor Muncie, Anthony Nguyen, Gus Paras, Grant Pate, Elyse Quartuccio, and Andy Snider.  Congratulations to Leann Miller who broke a minute for the first time in the 100 free, qualifying for Maryland Champs.  Welcome to Charlie Campbell who swam a BB time in his Raiders debut.  Others swimming with the Raiders for the first time were Lauren Dickerson and Sean Powers.  Top eight individual finishes and new BB or better times follow:

Raider Signs Division I Scholarship Offer    (November 21, 2007)

Congratulations to senior Jackie Hynson who today signed a National Letter of Intent to attend NCAA Division I Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan.  Oakland awarded Jackie a full-ride scholarship which includes the prestigious Presidential Scholar Award, OU’s top academic award for incoming freshmen.

Jackie is a distinguished honor student at King George High School, where she maintains a 4.38 GPA and is ranked in the top 1% of her class. Oakland University is Michigan’s third largest public university with nearly 18,000 students.

Jackie joins a successful Golden Grizzlies squad, the eight-time reigning Summit League champions for both men’s and women’s swimming. Oakland won ten NCAA Division II national titles, split evenly between the men’s and women’s, before moving to Division I in 1998, and the men were ranked fifth among the NCAA Division I mid-majors last year. OU is also one of just seventeen schools across the NCAA’s three divisions to have more than 150 individual national championships.
Oakland’s 159 titles in swimming and diving put it in such company as Oklahoma State (160) and California (158). Head coach Pete Hovland is in his 27th year coaching the Golden Grizzlies.

Twenty-four Raiders competed at the South Run Recreation Center in Springfield in the invitational meet hosted by the Victor Swim Club.  Twelve-year-old Amanda Caballero led the veteran Raiders with three firsts, a second, and two thirds, including an A time in the 50 back.  In addition to Amanda, Libby Exline and Hannah Hagadorn swam personal bests in all of their events.  Nine-year-old Kaylee Payne also had an outstanding meet, knocking nearly 20 seconds from her best times swum just two weeks ago and posting four B times.

Meanwhile, nine-year-old newcomer Andrew Nguyen swam five BB times, all of them top-four finishes. Andrew also set three team records in his short course debut, shaving over a second from Blake Clift’s 9-10 Boys 50 butterfly record and eclipsing Christian Ritacco’s records from 2002 in the 50 back and 100 IM by .34 and .57 seconds, respectively.  Also making their short course debut with the Raiders were Susan Duncan, Ashlynn Hall, Xavier Hall, Alex Nguyen, Anthony Nguyen, Sally Owen, Miata Reese, and Gaby Thompson.  Top eight finishes and new B or better times follow:
