Unity Meet    (July 28-29, 2007)

In the last meet of the 2007 Long Course season, all Raiders were invited to compete at the third annual Unity meet hosted by BCSC at UMBC’s outdoor 50-meter pool.  The small contingent of eighteen Raiders performed very well against several much larger teams, finishing fifth overall.  In fact, prior to Sunday afternoon’s session for 12&under swimmers, the Raiders were second in the team competition!

Mike Biffel captured the high point prize for Open Boys, totaling 130 points in his eight individual events.  Jackie Hynson finished second in the Open Girls category with 142 points.  Other Raiders scoring more than 50 points in individual events were Kathleen Lyon (101), Tyler Grigg (97), Curt Albert (96), Kourtney Miller (92), and Jake Quartuccio (61). The Raiders were also responsible for six new meet records in the OPEN age category:  200 free (Jake Quartuccio), 50 back (Mike Biffel), 100 back (Mike Biffel), 50 fly (Jackie Hynson), 100 fly (Jackie Hynson), and 200 free relay (Jake Quartuccio, Mike Biffel, Curt Albert, Matt Horton).

Numerous Raider team records were also broken.  Jacob Miller lowered his own records for 8&Under Boys in the 50 free (42.58) and 100 free (1:42.41) and broke Matt Cooke’s record from 2002 in the 100 back (1:59.16).  For 9-10 Boys, Andrew Nguyen broke Brett Farrell’s records in the 50 free, 100 free (1:31.35), 50 breast, and 50 butterfly and Daniel Grigg’s 100 breast record set earlier this year.  Tré Johnson established the records for 11-12 Boys in the 50 fly (50.23) and 100 back (1:48.09) and shaved .33 second from Christian Ritacco’s record from 2002 in the 50 free.  Tyler Grigg established the new standards for 13-14 Boys in the 50 back and 50 fly.  Mike Biffel established the 50 back record for 15-18 Boys with a time of 29.85, also eclipsing Josh Huger’s Open record from 2002 in the event.  For the girls, Kourtney Miller lowered her own records for 9-10 Girls in the 50 free, 200 free, 50 fly, and 100 back and eclipsed Audrey Donahue’s record in the 200 IM by 10.71 seconds.  Leann Miller established the record for 13-14 Girls in the 50 back.  Jackie Hynson knocked 1.94 seconds from Jessica Wright’s 15-18 50 breast record and lowered her own standards in the 50 free, 100 back, 50 fly, and 200 IM.  All except the 50 free were also records in the Open division.  The relays also swam well.  The Boys Open 200 Medley (Mike Biffel, Andy Snider, Curt Albert, Matt Horton) won with a time of 2:04.94, and the Boys Open 200 Free set a new Raider record in addition to the meet record with a first place time of 1:50.28.  The quartet of Sarah Grigg, Jackie Hynson, Kathleen Lyon, and Leann Miller, established the Girls Open 200 Medley Relay record and Girls Open 200 Free Relay record with second place finishes and times of 2:20.33 and 2:03.61, respectively.  Sarah Grigg’s leadoff leg of 36.14 in the medley relay knocked nearly a second from her team record in the 15-18 Girls 50 Back, breaking the last of the 34 new team records established at this meet!

Tré Johnson, Matt Horton, Alex Nguyen, and Andrew Nguyen all had impressive debuts with the Raiders, including their contributions to team records noted above.  Tré swam a B time in the 50 free (37.13), and Andrew swam four BB time and two B times, capturing three top-eight finishes!  Meanwhile, Matt swam A times in the 50 and 100 free and very strong freestyle anchor legs in two relays.  Congratulations also to Jake Quartuccio, Andy Snider, and Katie Taylor who swam personal bests in all of their events.  Top eight finishes and new BB or better times for all Raiders follow:

Speedo Champions Series Super Sectional    (July 19-22, 2007)

Jackie Hynson represented the Raiders at the Speedo Champions Series Super Sectional held at St. Mary’s College on July 19-22, 2007.  She was entered in just one event, 200 meter butterfly, and made the most of the opportunity.  During preliminaries on July 21, she won her heat with a time of 2:22.42, the third fastest time overall.  That evening she competed in championship finals, capturing a bronze medal with a AAAA time of 2:21.56.  She swam just shy of her personal best time of 2:21.42 swum a week earlier and just .39 seconds over the Speedo Summer Junior Nationals qualifying cut.

Mid-Atlantic LC Senior Championships    (July 11-14, 2007)

Seven Raiders qualified for and swam at the prestigious Mid-Atlantic Long Course Senior Champs meet held on July 11-14 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.  In a meet that featured 25 Olympic Trial cuts and 98 national qualifying times, the seven Raiders combined to break fifteen team records, swimming thirty personal bests and two Sectional cuts.

Jackie Hynson led the Raiders in top finishes, making the championship (A) final in the 100 butterfly, B final in the 200 butterfly, and C final in the 200 backstroke.  She swam Sectional-qualifying times in the 100 and 200 butterfly, and her time in the 200 fly missed a Speedo Junior Nationals cut by a mere .23 seconds!  She also broke eight team records.  She lowered her records from 2005 in the 100 fly (by .47 sec) and 200 back (by 5.15 seconds), and she shattered her record set just a month ago in the 200 butterfly by nearly seven seconds.  She also eclipsed Kathleen Lyon’s record from 2006 in the 400 IM by nearly eleven seconds.  All were also records in the Open category.

Jake Quartuccio and Mike Biffel led the team in personal bests, swimming six apiece.   Jake also broke the minute mark for the first time in the 100 free, knocked 6.68 seconds from his own 15-18 and Open records in the 800 free, and eclipsed by 1.57 seconds the 15-18 and Open records in the 400 IM, which had been set by Mike earlier this season.  Meanwhile, Mike knocked 4.38 seconds from his own 15-18 and Open records in the 200 back.

In addition to Jackie’s three appearances at finals, Kathleen Lyon qualified for the C final in 100 butterfly, and Mike Biffel qualified for the C final in the 100 back (which he scratched due to a scheduling conflict) and B final in the 200 back.  All five swims by the Raiders at Finals resulted in time improvements over the prelims swims; Kathleen jumped from 24th place to 18th with her 1:07.90 swim at Finals!

The quartet of Jackie Hynson, Kathleen Lyon, Sarah Grigg, and Anna Wells broke the last of the fifteen team records, establishing the Girls Open 400 free relay record with a time of 4:22.12.  Finishes for those who scored team points and new personal best times follow:

NCSA Junior Nationals    (March 20-24, 2007)

In the last Raiders competition of the 2006-2007 short course season, sixteen-year-old Jackie Hynson represented the team at the Junior Nationals swim meet held at the Orlando YMCA in Florida.  The meet attracted over 1200 elite swimmers from all over the United States as well as overseas.  Jackie entered the meet with qualifying times in the 50 and 100-yard butterfly and a bonus qualifying time in the 200 fly.  In addition to those three events, she swam time trials in the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke.

Jackie swam four personal best times in her five swims, setting new Raider records for 15-18 Girls and OPEN Girls in all four.  Her best swim was the 200 butterfly, where she dropped nearly three seconds, posted a AAAA time of 2:05.89, and qualified to swim at Junior Nationals again next year.  Seeded 125th going in to the meet, she captured an impressive 45th place finish.  She also swam personal bests in the 50 fly (26.95), 200 free (1:57.25, AAA) and 200 back (2:11.61, AAA).  The 200 free and 200 back times qualify Jackie in additional events for next year’s Sectional competition.

Speedo Champions Series (Sectionals)    (March 15-18, 2007)

Raiders Josh Huger, Jackie Hynson, Kathleen Lyon, Nathan Stephens, and Will Webber qualified and competed individual events at the Southern Region Sectionals held at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center near Gaithersburg, Maryland.  Mike Biffel, Christine Dunleavy, Sarah Grigg, and Anna Wells also represented the Raiders, swimming in relay events.

Will Webber had the top individual performance for the Raiders, breaking a minute in the 100 breast for the first time (59.97, AAA) and finishing sixth in the event.  His time and split (27.50) were team records, lowering Will’s own standards in the 15-18 Boys and OPEN 50 breast and 100 breast.  The top relay performance was turned in by the quartet of Jackie Hynson, Christine Dunleavy, Kathleen Lyon, and Anna Wells in the 200 medley relay.  They crushed the Raider record set earlier this year by nearly six seconds, swimming a time of 1:55.67.  Jackie’s leadoff leg (29.04) lowered her 15-18 Girls and OPEN team record in the 50 back.

Jackie Hynson also qualified for finals.  She finished thirteenth in the 200 fly (2:09.45, AAA) and twentieth in the 100 free (54.72, AAA), qualifying for consolation and bonus finals, respectively.  She scratched finals due to a scheduling conflict with the upcoming Junior Nationals competition.  Her 100 free time is a new team record for 15-18 and OPEN Girls.  Jackie also swam the 100 back as a bonus event, posting a AAA time of 1:01.39, and again breaking her own record in the 15-18 and OPEN categories.  Mike Biffel swam a new personal best time at the meet.  His leadoff leg in the 400 medley relay (56.46, AA) eclipsed his previous best, swum just two weeks ago.  Nathan Stephens also posted a personal best time of 23.88 in the 50 free, barely missing a AA cut.

Cassel’s Christmas Invitational    (December 14-17, 2006)

Thirty-eight Raiders competed at the four-day meet hosted by the Potomac Marlins at George Mason University.  The meet was held in a prelims/finals format and attracted over 1100 swimmers from twenty teams across Maryland, Virginia, and New Jersey.  Sixteen-year-old Jackie Hynson had a stellar meet.  She posted personal best times in six of her seven individual events, captured five top-eight finishes, and qualified two events (100 and 200 butterfly) for Junior Nationals!

Jackie also played a role in fifteen of the 23 team records set at the meet.  She set the new standard in the 15-18 Girls 100 free, 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 200 IM, and 400 IM.  Her split in the 100 fly (26.96) and leadoff leg in the 400 medley relay (1:01.61) also lowered her records in the 50 fly and 100 back, respectively.  All seven were also records in the OPEN category.  Kathleen Lyon assisted in the rewrite of the 15-18 Girls record book, breaking the team records in the 500 free and 1000 free.  Both were also records in the OPEN category.

Jackie and Kathleen were joined by Sarah Grigg and Charlotte Taft in the Senior Girls 400 free relay.  The foursome shattered the existing team relay record by six seconds and qualified for Sectionals with a time of 3:44.83.  Sarah’s leadoff leg of 57.27 is a personal best time in the 100 free and qualifies her for All-Stars.  The remaining two female records were set by Kourtney Miller, lowering her own record in the 100 back and eclipsing Megan Cooke’s record from 2002 in the 50 back.  For the boys, Jake Quartuccio eclipsed Jonathan Michela’s team record in 15-18 1000 free.  Also, the quartet of Matthew Cooke, Tyler Grigg, Javi Frontanes, and Patrick Jackman established the record (4:59.64) for 13-14 Boys 400 Medley Relay.

Swim & Rock    (November 17-19, 2006)

Thirty-eight Raiders attended the three-day meet hosted by Sea Devils Swimming at Oak Marr.  Swimmers aged ten and under competed in a timed finals format.  The older swimmers competed in preliminaries each morning with the top qualifiers returning for the evening finals sessions.

The Raiders were led by senior girls Jackie Hynson and Kathleen Lyon who both qualified for finals in all seven of their events.  Jackie improved upon her prelims times in all seven events, while Kathleen improved in five!  Both also posted three top three finishes:  Kathleen captured seconds in the 500 free, 400 IM, and 200 butterfly, while Jackie won the 200 butterfly and finished second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 200 free.  Jackie swam Sectional-qualifying times in the 100 and 200 butterfly, and Kathleen qualified in the 200 butterfly.  The two girls were also responsible for seven of the eleven team records broken at the meet.  Jackie set four (15-18 Girls and Open Girls 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly), and Kathleen set three (15-18 Girls and Open Girls 500 free and 15-18 Girls 400 IM).  They were joined in the female record book by nine-year-old Kourtney Miller who broke Megan Cooke’s record from 2001 in the 9-10 Girls 100 back.

Mike Biffel led the Raiders boys with personal best times in all five of his events, dropping a total of 56+ seconds, and qualifying for championship finals in three events.  Will Webber also swam well, finishing fourth in the 100 breast with a Sectional-qualifying time. His split in the event (27.88) also lowered his team records in 15-18 Boys and Open Boys 50 breast.  The last of the eleven team records was set by Blake Clift, recapturing his record in the 9-10 Boys 50 butterfly that Brett Farrell had broken just four weeks ago.

Ten-year-old Taylor Stark had a dynamite debut for the Raiders, finishing third in the 100 breast with an A time.  Also making their debut with the Raiders were Chase Renz, who swam four B times in his first-ever USA meet, and Mackay Mismash.  Finally, congratulations to the following swimmers who swam personal bests in all of their events:  Luke Barrett, Amanda Caballero, Sarah Grigg, Matthew Michela, Kourtney Miller, Gus Paras, Sam Paras, Grant Pate, and Elena Swick.  Top eight finishes and new BB or better times follow:
